It is ironic that the idea to form a soccer club in Listowel originated in the minds of a few people when they went to view an All-Ireland Final Football medal won by Gary McMahon of Church Street for Kerry in 1962. They had come to see the medal but also to see the F.A. Cup Final of 1963 between Manchester United and Leicester City. At the time there were only 6 televisions in Listowel and a large crowd gathered around Brian McMahon’s house. Obviously Manchester United’s style of play convinced them that it would be a good idea to form a club. In the early and mid 1960’s especially with lack of finance and of course the infamous GAA ban which fortunately was lifted in the late 1960’s; only one other club existed in Kerry at the time-Tralee Dynamo’s formed in 1961 making Celtic the 2nd oldest team in Kerry. Today, our academy is moving forward with some great talented young players. We now have teams in under 7's, 8's,9's and 10s. We have record numbers this season and also have doubled our coaching staff and FAI trained Coaches to continue this great development of grassroots football!. This year was very special in that we held our first international game at our club grounds in Tannavalla. It was extra special in that the club was represented by David Culhane and Brian Murphy - a big thank you to all those involved in making this a truly memorable occassion. |
